Wine Farming in Dahlonega Wine Country

Doghobble Wine Farm practices low-intervention wine farming that prioritizes grape viability and environmental stewardship. Our minimalist approach reduces chemical inputs and promotes biodiversity, emphasizing soil health, water conservation, and energy efficiency. By integrating these considerations, we seek to foster a more sustainable and ecologically balanced wine industry in our region.

Georgia Wine Varietals

Key to this philosophy is the selection of grape varieties that are well-suited to grow in this particular place. Doghobble’s first planted vines are:

Norton (Cynthiana): An American varietal with a rich history, Norton stands as an enduring heritage grape, commercially available for nearly two centuries. The Norton grape thrives on the Dahlonega Plateau due to its adaptability to diverse climates and soils and natural resistance to pests and disease.

Norton wines are known for their deep color, full body, and robust flavor profile. They often exhibit dark fruit characteristics, such as blackberry and plum, along with notes of spice. Norton wines are recognized for their structure and ability to age well, making them popular among red wine enthusiasts.

Lomanto: A Native American grape, Lomanto is known for its versatility, resilience, and ability to thrive in diverse terroirs. In the early 20th century it was grown in residential backyards but then emerged as a commercially viable varietal. These vigorous vines are disease and drought resistant and winter-hardy, producing elegant and complex wines.

Lomanto wines have a firm acidity and fruit-forward taste, with rich complex tones of blackberry. The grapes produce an intensely-colored claret red wine that is known for easy drinking.
